Nubia Redmagic 5G: I know quite well that Nubia doesn’t really ring a bell in Africa and in Nigeria to be precise, but this isn’t their first smartphone as they released the Nubia Redmagic 3S in 2019 which is a good phone.
The Redmagic smartphone is a sub-brand of the Nubia smartphone which itself is a sub-brand to the top brand ZTE smartphone. I hope you got that.
RedMagic smartphone makers focus on gaming smartphones and one of their aims is to top the chart when it comes to smartphones meant for gaming with other addons. This is a new gaming phone and you’re going to love it.
The company released a brand new kind of gaming smartphone called the Redmagic 5G which happens to be the fastest phone with the fastest display in 2020 as of the time this article was published.
Let’s start with the Display and Design of Redmagic 5G
The Redmagic 5G spots a really large display of 6.65-inch flat AMOLED FHD+ screen with 2,340 x 1,080 screen resolution, 144Hz refresh rate which is the highest ever.
Quick reminder, there is no notch n this one, it’s just a regular not too big bezels like what we have on the Google Pixel 3, better than it if I may say.
What made the phone the fastest smartphone in the world in 2020?
It’s the screen. The smartphone offers up to 144Hz refresh rate which superseded that of Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra, iPhone 11 Pro, OnePlus 8 pro, and any other flagship device out there. so I tell you, the display is a bomb, very responsive.
Honestly, the screen is super smooth throughout the User Interface, notification, gaming, and scrolling and it does get a good brightness level.
To the design, there is a glass back design but doesn’t support wireless charging technology, but we have a bonus feature on the device and it’s amazing (Hardware section below).
It seems like there is this special design that comes with gaming smartphones, as in it is just too beautiful to the eyes. The required elements for the design is of course RGB which the Redmagic 5G has and the logo glows like a notification.
There is a big bezel to the top and bottom but it is to the user’s advantage as they would get a big earpiece design and front-facing speakers. The company also designed the Redmagic with dedicated gaming buttons in order to keep the fingers off the screen when gaming.
Nubia Redmagic 5G Hardware, Power and Software
There is an active air cooling system on the side of the phone with an actual moving fan and air vents to keep the temperature down just as we have on laptops, cool right?
It’s a gaming smartphone so it’s OK to go extra, but there some downside that comes with going that far.
- Because of the huge space, dust and water-resistant is off the grid
- The placement of the buttons have moved below
Nubia Redmagic 5G is equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 which of course supports 5G with 8GB of fast DDR5 RAM and 256GB of fast UFS 3.0 internal storage.
Gaming on the Nubia Redmagic 5G is classic, games like Asphalt runs very smoothly with the colling system and the processor, users will barely have any issues with operations and gaming.
The dedicated buttons are work pretty well with all kinds of games. The buttons can be customized for different functions.
There is also another specialized gaming button (the red buttons) which opens the gaming mode when it is enabled. Users can do a lot here like monitoring the CPU, network speed, turning on and off the cooling fan, increase brightness, customize the other two gaming buttons mentioned above, and lots more.
The overall performance of the Redmagic 5G is great
The device houses a 4,500mAh battery capacity which of course is good because the screen is just 1080p plus users get a cooling system. The battery experience isn’t bad at all but something doesn’t add up.
The company claimed that the device supports USB PD up to 55W but it doesn’t go past ~25W with any PD-compatible charger but the Redmagic 5G still charges fast not just as expected.
To the software, its really disappointing to e be honest with so many bugs, for example,
- common apps crash almost all the time and some won’t even open like Google Photos,
- There are connectivity issues.
- Navigation is stressful as it doesn’t go with Google’s guidelines.
- Another annoying one is that the launcher can’t be changed, so frustrating.
- Notifications are annoying to deal with as you can only dismiss by swiping only to the right.
- Fails SafetyNet check, limiting the apps you can use — especially games (according to Androidpolice).
According to a report by Androidpolice on the Redmagic 5G OS review, they said
“With how pleasant the stock-like software on the Red Magic 3S was, the Red Magic 5G is a genuine disappointment, with heavy-handed changes that provide no benefit and plenty of drawbacks compared to the previous model. You can certainly get by, but it’s a much less pleasant experience compared to the previous phone.”
The software is in no way near a flagship device software.
How is Nubia Redmagic 5G Camera
The camera of Redmagic 5G is not close to being the best and it’s not that bad with a primary Sony IMX 686 Lens.
The camera will do well in a well-exposed area with enough natural light, although it still washes out in some areas, it does a good job as a gaming smartphone in conclusion.
