Pocophone X2 is here guys and as I said in my first impression, it is a mid-range device with lots of features to offer, but the question is will it live up to its predecessor, the Pocophone F1?
The device was recently launched and it was first seen in India but it is now available globally for an order. The Pocophone X2 might not exactly be what you really expected in terms of succeeding the ultimate Pocophone F1 which is camera oriented and power + hardware was a good thing on the Pocophone F1, the Pocophone X2 is also camera oriented but will it supersede its predecessor in terms of camera quality and other specs as the device looks like a replica of the Redmi K30.
Pocophone X2 Design
The Pocophone X2 is a beauty on its own and if this is the first time seeing this design, well it not new as we have exactly the same design on the Redmi K30, so it simply means the Pocophone X2 is a re-branded model of the K30. The device has a glossy looking back that happens to be very slippery on the hand so I’ll advise you should get a good case if you are to own this device in the future.
Pocophone X2 is designed with a quad-camera design that is aligned vertically in a beautiful manner, and the stainless looking circle design which is made from a Gorilla Glass 5 makes the design look really good with the reflection of light on it, and I think I have seen this somewhere? Oh yeah, on the Huawei Mate 30 Pro.
Pocophone X2 body is made of up plastic and glass; Plastic is used for the mid-frame, both the back and screen are made of glass, Gorilla Glass 5 to be exact which made the phone very slippery as I said earlier but doesn’t attract fingerprints.
The LED flashlight is placed slightly outside the circle as seen above, the fingerprint is on the rear side which is positioned perfectly on that very place that we have our traditional power button to fit our thumb when locking and powering the Pocophone X2, and the logo “POCO” maintained its position as seen on the Pocophone F1.
Pocophone X2 Display
Pocophone X2 features a big screen and the interesting part is the 120Hz refresh rate display, although this is an IPS LCD panel. The refresh is the biggest on any smartphone that features a high display refresh rate but being featured on a mid-range device like Pocophone X2, I am like wow.
The 120Hz refresh rate is great but I would have preferred the 60Hz refresh rate on Realme X2 which consumes less power compared to the Pocophone X2 display, although the 120Hz refresh rate on the device is not totally permanent, like it doesn’t apply to all games and other interface elements as it drops to 60GHz when necessary.
The 120Hz display at times doesn’t make scrolling look smooth, I think it would be corrected with the next update to fix that as it seems to be the issue of the software, so I’ll advise users to opt-in for the 60Hz display in the setting for now.
The display of the Pocophone X2 is super clear, colorful, and bright when outside, we have a double punch hole which can be hidden in the setting but the dual cut-out will be slightly visible as the LCD panel doesn’t feature that deep black to make the cut-out to blend in, and the HDR10 is all you need to experience the full length of full HD+ videos on the Pocophone X2.
Pocophone X2 camera
We have a quad-camera setup at the back with a pill-shaped vertical layout design, the primary camera is a SONY IMX686 64MP lens which in comparison with the Samsung lens on Realme X2 is better.
Let me take it from the top, the first camera is a 2MP macro lens with f/2.4 aperture which does quite good but not the best or near the best, the second lens is an 8MP with f/2.2 ultra-wide camera lens which does accurately well, showing details and good color in the shots and covering a wide area, the third is the 2MP depth camera lens with f/2.4 aperture to take care of that portrait shot for you and lastly, we have the 64MP SONY lens with f/1.9 aperture.
To be honest, Pocophone X2 might not supersede the Pocophone F1 but it does capture some impressive shots, we have a well detailed and well balanced colorful shot using the new 64MP SONY sensor in a good light environment.
Taking photos in a not so bright area is less impressive but it good. The Pocophone X2 has a good contrast ratio and when the photos are being zoomed-in, it displays a clear image compared to the Realme X2 with a Samsung sensor. Pocophone X2 has less noise and grains in its shots which makes the images crisper in all angles.
The ultra-wide-angle does really great too, but for the macro camera, I would have loved it more if Xiaomi opted in for the telephoto lens instead of the macro since the main camera offers a digital zoomed cropping feature which will give you the same close-up image quality as the macro lens on the Pocophone X2.
To the front is a dual camera of 20MP main camera and 2MP depth-sensing camera for user portraits shots. The front snapper does it well in a good light condition but has overexposed images in a dynamic range, and with the 2MP depth sensor, users get a slightly blurred hair region which most mid-range phones are still struggling with and some have used enhanced software to try to make the bokeh effect right around the hair region.
Video recording on the Pocophone X2 is nice even without optical image stabilization but it is a minus at a point if you have a shaky hand. The electronic video stabilization leaves the user with fewer worries, users get a vlog video maker and lastly, it displays well-detailed colors plus the recording goes up to 4K @30fps.
Pocophone X2 performance
Pocophone X2 is equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon 730G which performs really good but not as the Pocophone F1 which features a better chipset as at that time, so I was really expecting probably the snapdragon 855 since the device is a premium mid-range device but it isn’t bad at all, in fact, the experience was very great.
Poco X2 does not show any sign of lag or slowing down when multi-tasking, playing high digital games like PUGB and other casual games, running daily task, plus launching social apps was fast and typing is great, and on top of the chipset, we have a 6GB/86GB RAM with 128GB/256GB UFS 2.1 storage.
Users won’t get the best out of the device when playing games as most games don’t support the 120Hz display. The chip enables low power consumption to the very best that it can as the phone is packed with a 4,500mAh battery capacity with a 27W adapter.
The battery can actually last users over a day when it is being operated on a 60Hz display. There is also a fast charging technology that juice up the device from 10% to 100% in just 58 minutes which is really cool.
Overall performance is great on the Pocophone X2, with very smooth gaming experience, long-lasting battery, and fast charging technology, you should be great. The software might be a major concern actually, Pocophone X2 is shipped with the MIUI v11 packed with Poco launcher on top Android 10 Oreo.
Some Pocophone X2 software issues have to be fixed in an update to for issues like the 120Hz display slowing down scrolling and the ads in the notification have to be taken away, like it is really annoying but it can be disabled. Shipping the Pocophone X2 with a lot of pre-installed games and social apps is uncool but aside that, Pocophone X2 UI looks very clean and it is one of my favorites.
Pocophone X2 price in Nigeria
Pocophone X2 will roll out in Nigeria within 75,000 to 80,000 Naira which is considerable for the features it has to offer.
Lots of Xiaomi fans and Pocophone lovers might be disappointed because it wasn’t the Pocophone they were expecting but I know Xiaomi has something coming in the Pocophone line, just keep up.
